My RESEARCH

Analysis of the Movie ‘CROSSOVER’ 3-4 min intro.

For my research for Main courcework i chose this movie to analyse. Some of my ideas for our courcework were based on this movie, before we came to a conclusion, because it has the same genre that we would like our movie to be and to see how does their into starts and how could we start ours.

The movie ‘CROSSOVER’ is about a naturally talented basketball player who wants to become a doctor. Starring: Wayne Brady,Antony Mackie and Philip Champion who's a professional Basketball/streetball player.

‘CROSSOVER’ starts with a pitch black screen and diegetic sound of someone walking and the noise of the car open. As we hear the door closes there is a close up of a face appears on the side mirror of the car showing the facial expression of the man. There is a jump cut used of the mans face in another mirror in the car. The music is upbeat and sets the mood and the representation of the man. There is a visual effect used in editing when the camera moves very fast toward the action. A tracking shot is used as the car moves. This is followed by a close up of the mans face in the car showing his facial expressions and letting the audience know that he might be the main character. There are some non-diegetic sounds as the visual effects are used, for instance when the camera moves fast towards where the car is going to move.
Sound mixing is used as the car moves, there are some background noise as well as the sound effects for example a background noise of people speaking.

During the movement of the car there is a reverse shot used and the sound effects and the same time, which makes the editing professional and very effective.
The camera moves up with a sound effect and then faces downwards which may be a birds eye view to follow the motion of the black car. As the car stops the title of the movie appears. The title is silver colour and the font used is very unusual, because the R at the end is extended to the beginning of the title. This makes the title unique and effective. The colour of the title is silver against the dark background which makes the font stand out and attracts viewers’ attention.

There are some visual effects are used after the title is dissolved. The camera moves fast as it the motion is fast forwarded, this effect is used to show the views a lot of detail and the location in small amount of time. There is another fast forwarded motion effect used as the character is walking down the corridor.
The camera follows the movement of the character and then there is a medium shot which makes him look powerful and the boss because he is standing up and the others are sitting down. There are some background noises used like the phone ringing and people speaking on the phone. The dialogue is used “Ring them up” also makes him the boss and powerful because he is controlling the people at the computers Camera moves into the computer screen showing the details of what is going on. There is a shot / reverse shot used shot of the man standing and then the motion back to the computer screen. This whole transition is happening in a short take and the camera moves very fast.

The camera moves slowly as new characters appear in the scene. The music used is very slow and classic which makes the character that is shooting the hoops relaxed and confident. There is an establishing shot used to show the detail and the location of the action happening. Close up is used to show that the ball went thought the hoop (basket).
An extreme close up of the phone is used to show the viewers the detail of who is calling and gives an effect of tension at the same time.
The conversation is followed by an establishing shot of a white building and the fast movement of the camera at the same time as sound effects.

When the second character answers the phone the camera closes up to his face showing his facial expression and disagreement with the 1st character ‘Tech’.

Overall the editing used in this extract is very professional and has a large range of transitions and cuttings.
The sound sets the mood and the representations of the characters of this movie intro. There are a lot of sound effects used as well as the background sound, sound mixing and diegetic and non- diegetic sounds are used.
Mise-en-esene is an important point to mention in every movie. The costumes used in this movie are intelligent, smart suit and modern sports wear and a basketball. The location sets the narrative from the beginning for instance one of the locations was a basketball court, which the narrative is about basketball player.
The camera shots and movements used in this extract are quite an important point to mention as well. There were some movement of camera for instance a tracking shot and some compositions are also used to make a good effect.

There is a similar type of movie genre in a film ' Coach Carter ' which i have looked at as well to make my research effective for the main task.

Our 2nd film...

We have been planning and discussing about who should do what and where we are going to film the 2 min film into. We also have prepaired a dialogue which we atre going to use in the movie.
Our conclusion was that Matt Harrop is going to film and myself ( Mirzo young) and Alex Cox are going to be the main characters. We are going to have another character who will play as Alexs friend.

We are going to film in Alexis house because our film starts with a character waking up. We then continue filming in the park and basketball court in Leatherhead.

We will have to make this movie better than our first peace because we didnt use a tripod most of the time which make some scenes unstable and shaky.

Our ideas are based on the movies 'CROSSOVER' and 'Coach Carter', which are both sport/drama genres.
Im going to analyise the movies for my research and get some ideads of how this type of genre movies start.

Analysis of Die Hard 4.0

Die hard 4.0 starring Bruce Willis, Timothy Olyphant, Justin Long and Maggie Q.

The 4 min intro of this movie tells the viewers what the narrative is going to be about. The hacker is giving the woman a secret code that could be used to brake into the FBI information centre.

The movie starts with a camera moving down the office full of computers and ends the motion when reaches the hacker which is an establishing shot. There is point of view shot of what the boy is doing on the computer. The computers shows the audience ‘unlocking password/ user connection…’ which gives us an idea he is doing something bad alone in the room full of computers. The camera zooms in showing the details of what is happening on the screen. At the same time there are actors name come up and disappear in a modern way, this shows the audience the movies genre which is action/ thriller. There is a short take of the hacker looking back and then camera fades in to the women he is sending the information to. The music sets the mood which we as audience see that they are doing something not right and will cause action in the story line. The camera moves into the computers screen again to show what the woman sees this is a point of view shot again. The name of the movie appears on the screen white coloured on the black background which stands and catches audience attention. There are some sound effects when the movies name comes up and goes off as well as the when actors names appear and disappear on the dark background. There is a jump cut used between the hackers and the women’s conversation through the phone.

The camera now movies slowly to the other hacker. There is a cross cutting transition used showing his computer screen. In between these shot and long takes there camera fades out into the actors names on the dark background. There are a lot of visual effects showing the information and setting the narrative, what the movie is going to be about. The dialogue is used between the women and the other hacker, talking about if it is legal or not. The music tells the views that it is an illegal operation because the music is slow and creates tension. There is a diegetic sound thought the opening scene, we can hear the sound of them typing on the computers.

Short take of a location which is an establishing shot, following by a point of view shot of the man playing a game. When the hacker hits the delete button and we see the red light, this tells the audience something is going to happen and creates tension and suspense. A long shot of the house on fire and the camera fades out. There is post production and superimposition used during a shot take of images on the computer screen. The close up of the camera of the woman typing, showing the details, followed by match on action. An establishing shot used from the air, which could be an aerial shot of the location and country. This tells the viewers the movie is set in the USA.

The music is very loud and evil when the camera moves from the top of the building where there are a lot of computers and big screens which looks like an information centre, this creates tension, suspense and confusion.
This shot might suggest to the audience that this movie could be in the future because of all the updated technologies used. A close up of mans facial expression is shown. The camera follows the action as the characters move to the other room. There is a background sound of computers, people talking and phones ringing.

The editing used in this opening scene is very modern and professional. There were a lot of transitions used. The effects used in the scenes were effective. However, there were not a lot of camera angles and compositions used.

Next peace of courcework

2 minute intro of the film...

My first ideas creating this into was it was going to be comedy/action but than i thought it is going to be hard to make it action. So we in the group decided to go with sport/drama intro because we liked the idea of sport. originally we thought about horror, which is quite easy and simple to make.
we started with planning the work, what props we are going to use, where we are going to film it and how we are going to do it.
Then i drew a storyboard of this intro. My group and i liked it so we went with an idea of making the movies genre -> Sport / drama

Analysis of Godfather

Opening scene of Godfather.
I have analysed ‘the finest Gangster film every made’ “Godfather” starring: Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and James Caan.

The Godfather opens in 1945, at the wedding of Connie Corleone, the only daughter of Vito Corleone, the head of the most powerful organized crime family in the United States. During the wedding, Corleone, respectfully referred to as the Godfather, is grateful to meet with people who need his help.

The title of the film is white on the dark background which stands out and grabs views attention. Representing Black and White as good and evil. There is classic music in the background. The scene starts with an Italian man speaking. The camera zooms out of the mans face showing the audience his expressions and feeling. He is sitting in the dark room as the camera is zooming out. He is talking to someone showing his emotions, this builds up tensions as to who is he speaking to. As the camera zooms out in very slow motion it becomes an over the shoulder shot showing the listeners hand. The dark background in the room suggests the sadness and emotion. The camera keeps zooming out until the listener speaks; his face is still not shown to the audience, which again is mysterious. The characters face is now revealed with a close up shot showing his facial expressions after the man whispers in his ear. There is an establishing shot of people sitting in back suits in the dim lighted room. The camera is set to the ‘godfather’ who is talking to the man behind the mans back and showing a medium shot of the godfather on the left side of the screen. There is an over the shoulder shot used again when the man who wants a favour from the ‘godfather’ is at an angle. The camera then follows the ‘godfathers’ motion as he comes close to speak to the man leading the camera on to the over the shoulder shot again. Over the shoulder shot is used during the conversation. The camera shots stays at 180 degree not crossing the line. As the man walks out of the room there is an Italian song played which creates a happy mood for the man. This leads to the conversation which uses over the shoulder shot.
The suits that are used in the scene represent the intelligence of the men and the colour which is black and has a rose sticking out from the left chest pocket representing the wedding.

The edditing of this movie is simple going because there are not many transtionons used during the analysed scene.

Preliminary Exercise film...

This was the first part of coursework which we worked on. We did not plan this work very well andwe just go on with it with out thinking through. However we managed to finished it on time. We tried to use a lot of camera angles and tried to make it professional. During the filming every one in my group came up with an idea and we ether agreed or disagreed with the idea. I was mostly filming and tried to make the angles and the camera work as professional as possible but it was hard.

When it came to editing we tried to use some useful transitions, where we needed to make the work look good. Also the music was produced by us, which we edited into the film so it would flow with the action and motions. We thought it will be better if we edit an instrumental into the film to make it look and sound professional. We have split audio so that there will be no diagetic sound when the soundtarack is playing, which sound better.

The location we agreed with and used was at school. We didnt look at the lighting, props and make up in detail because is was our first movie.

We could have improved out work and have done better if we would have spend more time on planning the work, drawing it on the storyboard sheet where we could have looked at the angles we were going to use each scene we shot and analyse what we are doing. We could have used a tripod more often in the scenes because we didn't and at some point you could see the camera is unstable and shaky. Also we could have made our narrative and the dialogue a bit longer and straight to the point, so that the audience would understand what is actually going to in the short film.

Overall i think we have done a great job for our first movie. We tried to use a large variety of camera movements and angles creatively. I have learned a lot from this peliminary exercise which i could use for my courcework and improve on things that we havent included or were not accurate at some points.
