Our Groups Developement

From the preliminary exercise to our main piece of coursework, great steps were made in improving our skills and techniques.

Whereas in the first exercise, our use of camera shots was quite limited, our second piece included more sophistacted shots with more purpose to them. We were more confident and so experimented with a greater range of shots to achieve a more interesting piece of film for the audiences viewing. The match-on-action of the character walking through the door that we learnt from the first piece was carried through to the second film, as we knew it was a technique that would really boost the quality of our piece. We learnt which shots worked and which shots were too ambitious. Our camera work improved, as it was far steadier in the second piece and gave a more proffesional feel to the film.

The editing was also vastly improved. In the first piece we used several peel screens which looked quite amateur, so with our second piece we decided to only use neccessary editing that would keep the film flowing effectively. This was important in improving the continuity of our piece and keeping the verisimilitude of the film.

The music in the first film worked well, as it was upbeat and targeted the correct audience. So we brought this philosophy into our second piece, and chose a soundtrack which would fit the chosen genre and audience. The dialogue was also improved on, as we felt it had more purpose to it in the second piece. The use of the music as a sound bridge from one shot to the next also works well with the editing to sustain continuity.

Despite not paying much attention to mise-en-scene in our initial piece, we realized it was vital to address this in our second piece. Therefor much more thought and effort was put into the setting and props that we would include in our second film. This gives a far greater clarity to the narrative of the second piece (such as the basketball and graffiti), which would help to entice the audiences attention.

Evaluation of initial pratical task.

For our first piece of practical corsework we decided to make it upbeat and easy to watch. We used a wide range of camera angles and offered a very in depth view into the action. The first shot i am especially pleased with as it gives a very effective view of the two characters and the setting of the film.

The soundtrack we used was a track that i made personally and we all thought it set the mood of the representation very well as it is upbeat and is of a youthful genre and so fits the type of audience the film is aimed at.

We generally used very lilttle editing as the use of cut shot transitions was what we considered best as there are a large number of shots fitted into a short space of time.

We set the film in a school as this was a realistic setting for the type of film it is. We feel we could improve on this film by offering a wider range of sho types and lengths and to maybe experiment with different types of editing to improve the quality of the viewing and the dialog.

Improvements that could have been made

in reply to the comments left by other groups we fully agree with both the positive and negative points raised. The main issue we have found is the lack of clarity in the dialogue. This could have been solved by the use of the 'Boom' microphone as it would have improved the quality of sound. This however was impossible due to the lack of required equipment to make our opening the highest quality it could have been. We also would have liked to have used split screen shots in our editing, but we didnt have the technology to do so effectively.

Evaluation of others... movie intro 'Uk Ambition'

We like your use wipe cuts and use of different shot especailly the slow motion shot. We also liked the way that your non-digetic music faded in and out with the dialogue.

However we were slightly confused that the weather changed from snowing to sunny weather in the matter in seconds.

Well done!

Firstly, the establishing shot used was highly effective in establishing the setting of the film.
The close-up shot of the 'respect' hand gesture meant that the close relationship of the two characters was emphasised very clearly. This suggested some relevance to the storyline, genre and the rest of the film.
As you adhered to the 180 degree rule, the shot reverse shot was really subtle and emphasised the ease of conversation between the two characters. This allowed the piece to seem very realistic!
The continuity of the entire piece was very successful, as it flowed smoothly throughout. This meant that the film was easy to relate to because it allowed verisimilitude to continue.

One negative point about your film, we thought, was the editing. Although it was good to see some clear editing techniques used in the opening, the use of wipe shots meant that the film looked a little unrealistic.

Our favourite shot was the last one, where you used slow motion and a low angle shot. This was excellent! It was done so well and emphasised the character's superiority. It introduced the storyline of ambition and could easily have lead on into a feature length film from that shot.

Excellent work!

p.s We loved the music! It really emphasised the genre of the film and was really appropriate. It worked really well in suggesting the events of the day, when the character was waking up for example, the pace, first slow, then gradually faster as the characters started to move was perhaps reflective of their lifestyle.

Mirzo, Alex and Matt, nice work lads! Some good camera angle but i especially like the birds eye view shot of coxy walking down the stairs. I liked the use of slow motion and close up shots to emphise the respect shown between Coxy and Mirzo. I also like the ending shot of the slow motion lay up, very nice.
But i dont understand how Mirzo ended up with a White hat when he doesnt have one at the start and also, who sleeps with a jumper and a pair of trackies on!
To maybe improve on your film, you could maybe tilt the camera on some of the basketball shots that mirzo takes to make it look more impressive, other than that i enjoyed whatching your film

Research on the opening two minutes of The Ring 2

You can immediately tell that this is a horror film from the opening two minutes. The backing music used creates suspense and tension for the audience, and the aerial shot of the water creates an air of mystery for the audience, who do not know what to expect from this.
Diagetic sound is used of the clock ticking to further enhance the suspense whilst the scene carries on. Close ups are used of the video tape and then an extreme close-up is used of the character inserting the video tape into the recorder which draws the audiences attention to this particular point of the film, emphasizing its significance to the narrative.
An establishing shot is used early on after the mysterious shot of the water to give the audience a clear view of where the scene is being set. The use of silence is important in that it creates an uneasy atmosphere for the audience, who would find the scene unpredictable.  The 180 degree rule is executed so the audience do not become disorientated within the conversation and are aware of their surroundings and can then pay more attention to the dialogue.
The mise-en-scene used is subtle yet affective. The characters and surroundings appear normal, to further create the feeling of unrest amoungst the audience.  The use of normal clothes and props in the home suggest that this is a normal film, though the use of sound and camera shots contradict this. For instance the low angle shot of the male character when he finds hand print up his arm, gives an impression that he is trying to gain control of a situation which is perhaps supernatural, a technique often used in many horror films.
Tracking is used to follow the movement of the male character from his point of view, though no other editing is used in the scene, as a sense of reality is clearly being implemented.

Our Final Verdict on 'UK Ambition'

From the feedback we have recieved regarding the many different elements of our film we have concluded that there is a definate improvement on the first attempt we made. The responses we got were generally positive whilst offering many ways of improving it. The general idea was that the soundtrack fitted very well and some of the shots we uded were very inventive but at some points elements of the storyline didn't fit very well with what the audience were viewing on screen. We agree with all the comments made and thank you greatly.

300 Opening Evaluation

The opening to 300 is typical of many period drama representations. Throughout the first 2 minutes that i watched there was a continuous narative that helped set the time period and the storyline to enable the audience to gain full understanding of the situation and the backround of the story being told. There is also an underlying soundtrack being played during the narative which helps set the mood and the purpose of the film. I found it quite dark and almost religeous which is what is being attempted during the extract. It also helps to put emphasis on some of the narative particulary during the more descriptive periods and offers a sound bridge between shots. The narative itself is meant to be non diagetic and is for the audiences ears only. The use of a narative makes the audience feel as if they have exclusivity to the entire story and can often predict some future events in the storyline simply through the narrative.

The camera work that is used in this particular film is very intresting. There is no obvious use of an establishing shot but the opening shot is of a pile of skulls that is explainrd through the narative. There is a very wide range of shots used and there tends to be alot of shortertakes and continuous editing used to keep the film flowing and add to the mood set by the narrative and the soundtrack. A typical example of how the film varies its use of the camera is during a combat scene where the first shot is held for ten seconds before it is cut and from then on shots are held for a maximum of three seconds. This could have been done to establish what was happening before offering a more detailed view into the action.

Editing plays a huge role in the quality of this film. Not only the fantastic us of CGI but the use of lighting, shot transition and slow motion effects. All these elements give the audience the best insight possible and make the film look like a proffesional mastery. Slow motion shots during combat scenes offer the most detailed view of the action and the camera doesn't shy away from these elements in the slightest. The focus of these scenes is often on the blood itself not always the action going which adds to the graphic effect the fim offers.
Overerall, a very watchable film with great use of modern techniques and use of a great storyline.

Adulthood Opening Evaluation

The opening to the modern day British classic Adulthood contains many techniques that are unique and inividual to its creation. From the very first scene the audience is immediatly thrown into the story from the use of flashbacks and clever editing. The useage of these flashbacks offers the audience a reminder of the events that took place in Kidulthood which are key to the storyline of the sequel and you really have to watch both to get the full idea of the message that is being portrayed.

At the very beginning, during the flashback sequence there is a very clever use of silence. This is done to set the mood for what is being shown on screen and to add reality to the idea of the flashback sequence. As it progresses there is a gradually increasing introduction of diagetic sound as it leads up to the focus of the opening which is when Sam hits Trife with a baseball bat. This particular action is what the whole storyline is built around and the clever use of sound and fade to black shot transitions really gives across the meaning of the scene and how influential it is to the whole plot. After this, the whole perspective of the opening changes when the a subtitle saying 'six years laters' appears on the screen to symbolise the transition back to what is presently happening in the story. The sound, camera work and editing all adapt to fit the new setting. There is an immediate difference in the mood which is set by the introduction of a soundtrack. The genre being modern day London Hip-Hop gives the audience a setting almost whithout having to watch the film itself. However, the establishing shot of a busy main road and the movement round and under to veiw the action occuring beneath really adds conviction to the initial impression.

There is also editing used throughout the opening sequence to influence the speed of the shots. Slow and fast motion are both linked to give an upbeat mood and at the same time symbolise danger. The slow motion shots are also used to focus on certain points of action and ensure that they are clear to the audience as detail is essential in this particular film. The film also achieves this by spliting the screen three ways at a number of points to show different aspects of the action from different perspectives. It gives a better view of the setting and at the same time doesn't waste time doing so. It could also hint at the modern element of the film and how it is representing current gang, drug and weapon issues within modern society.

Throughout the opening sequence there tends to be mainly high angle shots that give an impression of the setting and the general action from a distance. This may be because there has been no introduction of main character roles at this point and the idea is to give the audience almost an open teaser of what the storyline is about. The content would also suggest this, as there is visual drug, sex and violence reference within the opening two minutes without any dialog used. This is an unusual way of opening a film as it is often considered to not make sense without dialog in the first 2 minutes.

The genre of this film is set instantly and is clearly a crime drama. It gives a modern representation of young communities in west London and shows how racial and moral cultures clash on a day to day basis. The ingenius use of sound, camera work and editing makes this film very watchable and in my eyes a must see. I also get the idea from the content that every young person is meant to be able to relate to the film in some way or another through the issues it deals with and how the characters behave.

Evaluation of UK AMBITION Film...

Our Film is based on a young basketball player, who wants to make into the a professional basketball player. Our initial ideas about the film was to create a good action film, but some time later when we discussed the idea in detail it became complicated and not an easy genre to do. So we came to a conclusion that we will make sport/drama genre which is very interesting and not so complex to make. We also chose this genre because there are a lot of different camera and movement shots.
We were changing the ideas as we went along to make scenes better and professional. The main characters in the film are two good friends who are meeting up and discussing the future of dreaming basketball player.

Working With Existing Forms and Conventions

We observed the conventions of continuity very well. We tryed to make scenes in detail as possible to make the into flow, so the audience would be interested and intrigued to watch the movie.
Our film does challenge the genre as it has the use of background music nearly throughout the intro, which is not used in the same genre movies i have research on.This creates the atmosphere and mood.
We have not used any intertextuality in our film, because it is only an into of the movie, so there is not a lot of time to fit it in.
The type of audience pleasure that we are trying to provide is the story of a basketball player who is dreaming to be a professional and unrevealed as yet. I'm confident that we have satisfied the audience with our intriguing opening scene.

Representation

We have represented a very stereotypical and determined young basketball player who with the help of coaches and who has an ambition to progresses to reach the professional level of basketball. This has been represented in the opening by the use of the the urban court, which emphasises that the boy is not very rich but is a talented player. the use of clothes represents the personality of the person, so we have used trackies, a hoodie and a coat with a hat, which represented the character in his own unique way. the use of the weather conditions created the atmosphere and the mood in the scenes which was in the middle of sun and light coloured clouds. this set a happy and great atmosphere.

We have tryed to include most of the characters and people which are targeted for the genre we created. Teenagers are included and older people are excluded. if the movie would be extended to a longer time than there would be older people included to make it realistic.

We have chosen a our intro to begin from the house all the way to the basketball court, which seems realistic because every persons day start from him/her waking up and get ready to go out. We have also made use of the court with graffiti around and no net on the basket. This tells the audience where the character is from, which is also realistic because it emphasises that he has a lower class family and lives in difficult conditions.

Mise en scene is quite important in our Film which makes the film realistic and sets the location as well as the use of props and lighting. The music sets the mood and the atmosphere in the scenes. The acting is even more important because this will tell the audience how it feels to be in characters position. The camera work shows different type of views in a scene which gives audience more detail of the location of the characters, emphasised the character's superiority and the construction of verisimilitude.

Institutions

The kind of media institution that more likely to distribute our product is working Title, this is because they produce movies that are unique, talented and are British films.

Audiences

Our main audience are mostly teenagers and older people who like Basketball. We came to this conclusion because of the music, locations, mese-en-Scene and camera compositions we have used.

My analysis and research process in pre-production of the movies was very useful and successful in some ways. I have found out what will be the best way to start our film, the type of shots should be used not making audience confused regarding to the positions/locations of the characters, the type of music genre played, the type of locations should be used and the most importantly the editing including transitions, cutting and continuity.

In filming and editing we have ensured that the meaning would be apparent to the audience by making it clear and simple story line. We made clear to the audience from the start of the movie. Following the actors throughout the intro so it would be clear for the audience to understand what is happening. We made some creative decisions while rehearsing our conversation part of the intro. Improving on our lines and making then sound realistic. We made the last shot of the intro slow motion which has influenced the sense of the audience.

When we trialled aspects to our target audience to get their opinions and views of the film, the respond we had was mostly positive as you can see at the comments made. Most of our audience commented on the last shot of the intro which looked very effective and has emphasised the character's superiority. We did our best to entertain the audience.

Using Technology

Technology like a camcorder enabled us to develop our opening scene. The use of camcorder was portable and allowed us to to range of shots. We have also used a tripod which enables us to make more stable and accurate shots making the scenes realistic and professional. However, if we had a better camera our shots could have been much better and professional. I think we did a mistake not using a microphone, which spoils some of the dialogue in the film. We have also used editing software which helped us to improve our film into by including transition of images, sound, cuttings and continuity of the film.

The Preliminary exercise to the main task helped us not to make the same mistakes. The digital technology enabled us to develop our opening by using the editing software effectively, to make the into look better. We also learned from Preliminary exercise some rules of the camera movements and angles to make the main task have a better effect on the screen. For instance in the Preliminary exercise we did not use a tripod successfully and not very often, but we have looked back at our errors and and use of the tripod to make the scenes stable. However, we did not use a 'Boom' microphone to make our conversations clear and profession. This made our dialogue scences a little poor and careless.

Myself and my group did a lot of research on the music choise that should have been used in the intro and came up with a better choise of music after uploading the work.
I was quite dissapointed with the use of sound as you have most probably noticed. We did our best trying to keep the sound clear and professional. By the use of IT helped us to improve when we had to fade the soundtrack into the backround which worked really well. However, during the dialogue there are other backround diagetic sounds which do not make the scenes look good and make it seem a sloppy work.

Final Verdict

I'm very pleased and happy with our final film because it showed a huge improvement. I had a good time Acting and editing which was fun and challenging. Overall if we were to do a task like this again we would improve on our mistakes and make even a better intro of the new film.
From the feedback we have recieved from the our teacher and other poeple regarding the many different points of our film we have felt of a definate improvement than the the first attempt we made with our peliminary work. The responses were generally positive but there were some things where we could have done better like the soundtrack, as we did in our peliminary work, which was prodused by the member of our group and sounded very original.

An insight into 'UK Ambition'

UK ambition follows a gang of young male characters who only know a life of drugs , crime and violence. Since birth they have lived on the same east London estate and as is all to common in modern society, they have never had a proper parent figure to look up to. However, there is one promise on the horizon. This comes in the form of Basketball and is Darius' (Mirzo Y) only hope of escaping a world where fighting is a way to pass the time, Crime is an afterschool activity and gang war is the way of life.

As shown in the opening two minutes, Sport is the main genre of this film but it also follows up as an insight into modern day British poverty and the 'Yob' culture that goes hand in hand with this. The storyline follows the traditional 'Zero to Hero' format that is seen alot within modern day Cinema. This gives the representation a feel good factor aswell as a potent wake up call into the state of elements of Britains current society.

The Making Of 'UK Ambition'

The idea for 'UK Ambition' was based largely around the format of urban culture. We took a long time considering how to approach the issue of realism whilst at the same time giving the audience somehthing they haven't seen before. The location, soundtrack and dialog were all an integral part of this process and it took up a large amount of time simply getting the feel for the genre of the representation.

The location for our film was in my eyes the most important factor. We had to find somewhere that would put across the right message and set the tone for the film. In the end we chose a council estate near where we all live and this is where the theme of sport (Basketball) originally came from, as this particular location just happend to have a basketball court. The genre of sport gave a great chance to use a wider range of shots than we had in our prelimenary task and this meant we could experiment and edit more of the footage to put together a very accomplished peice of filming. The use of a low angled slow motion shot at the end of the film, i feel was a great way to end the representation as it gives a clear message of the genre and purpose of the film.

We did come up against a few small issues which we did eventuallt solve. The first time we shot the coversation between the two characters we didn't use the 180 rule effectively and it was quite confusing for the audience to gage an understanding of the characters viewpoints. We got this feedback from 3 different people and decided to re-film it but this time pay close attention to the quality of the shots. Another slight problem that we unfortunatly couldn't correct in time was the unfortunate weather conditions. At the beginning of the film the weather is overcast and is showing hints of snow. This however, changes within a few seconds of the representation to sunshine. The reason being for this is we fimed a number of different shots on different days and this made the conditions of the setting quite contrasted throughout.

We researched different techniques from films of similar genre to give us a guidline as to how to create the right effect. In the end we found the Noel Clarke film 'Adulthood' to hold a number of intresting ideas and techniques and found that fims of that particular genre use very fast flowing shot transitions and alot of subtle editing. As you can proberbly see from our film we have used the same technique to try and recreate the effect.

The soundtrack wasn't a great issue. We knew we had to use a local artist of the urban genre and managed to find a song from an unsighned London Grime artist. This really gives the film conviction as it fits perfectly with what is going on on screen and lies well with the purpose of the film.

We tried to use a wide range of shots and ensure that their purpose was clear to give the audience the best possible experience of the storyline. This meant filming a lot of material from different angles, positions and lights to create the best possible effect. We used a Birds Eye View shot at one point to give the audience a wider view of the characters surroundings aswell as two establishing shots to give across an initial idea of the setting. The reason for their being two is that the location changed halfway through and we felt it neccesary to re-establish the setting.

Our film UK Ambition is about a young basketball player who with the help of many, progresses to reach proffesional level, and follows a rags to riches concept. We were originally going to m,ake it an action film, but decided a sporting drama would be more original and intersting to film. Whilst planning, we also decided the location, dialogue and camera shots we that we were goin to use. I was filming most of the film, and Mirzo Young and Alex Cox were mainly acting.

For the opening 2 minutes we decided to use a range of camera shots and angles, and started off with an establishing shot, so the audience instantly gets a clear picture of where the current scene is taking place. A second establishing shot is used later on in the scene of the railway bridge, informing the audience that the setting by this time had changed. A simple close up of the alarm clock was used so the audience also gained the knowledge of the time of day. We used fairly basic camera shots for most of the opening sequence to keep a steady opening. However some more complex shots were also used. A close up of the basketball was used to hi-light it's importance in both the genre and narrative of the film. Another close up of the greeting of the two characters was used to emphasize their close friendship, and the conversation that followed used over-the-shoulder shot which included the 180 degree rule, so the audience did not become disorientated.

At the end of the opening two minutes a low angle shot was used of Mirzo practicing his basketball skills, to portray him as the character in the ascendency, and the character who holds power and confidence in the film. For most of our opening 2 minutes we used a tripod to keep the camera steady, but handheld the camera when needed for more sophisticated shots. Panning was used quite often to track the movement of the two characters prior to their meeting. To keep the film realistic we needed to convey steady camera movement to the audience.

It was important for the audience to believe what the narrative delivering to them, so the clothes and music we used had to fit the genre. Therefore we had Alex Cox and Mirzo Young wearing sporting clothes, and not designer wear, to emphasize the characters lack of money and status. We filmed inside an outdoor basketball court, and included a shot of the surrounding grafitti, to give the location a gritty, urban apperarance. Other props such as the basketball were also included in the mise-en-scene, to help establish the contempory, urban feel we were looking for.

We decided we would use an urban soundtrack, of either the UK hip hop or grime genre, to fit with our film. After experimenting with many different soundtracks, we felt the one we chose complemented the film best. The beat dropped in unison with the transition of the characters waking up and getting ready, and the speed was well suited to the pace of the film. The singer has a confident voice, which represents the character's ambition. This soundtrack was played throughout the sequence and acted as a sound bridge, so the scenes appeared to flow uninterrupted. Also some of the lyrics such as, 'you're so crisp' and 'im not a top breh' explained the characters position at that point of the film. The dialogue of the two characters is to the point, and of an informal manner, showing them to be friends. Whilst scripting it, we included words and phrases, for example 'safe' to further get across the characters personalities.

The amount of editing we could use was obviously limited as we only had two minutes, though we ddi include some which helped the pace of our opening. Fow smooth transitions, wipe screens were often used as it gave a competitive feeling of the two characters jostling for screen space, which is symbolic of their competitve nature in the narrative. Slow motion was also used for the very last shot, in order to capture the skill of the young basketball player and create a unique visual effect for the audience to enjoy. Match on action of the characters leaving their houses was used to keep the scene interesting and fast paced, so that the camera shots did not simply just feed the film to the audience.

Whilst filming, and after recieving feedback from several people, some issues were encountered and rectified. During the conversation we did not properly use the 180 rule, and so refilmed this part for the benefit of the audience, making it easier for them to understand where the conversation is taking place. It was difficult to include all the props and clothes in all the shots and retakes that we did, but as we were short on time we decided it did not notice badly enough to be a real problem. The weather also caused a problem, as in the same scene it changes from snowy to sunny in a matter of seconds. However because we filmed over a number of days, and were quite restricted with time, there was nothing that we could really do about this.

Having evaluated our opening, if we were to do this again we would have put more thought into the planning and organisation of the filming to avoid the problems that are listed above. We would also have spent longer developing the dialogue, as we felt that this could have been stronger. Other than that we felt we succeeded in most other areas in executing an opening two minutes which exposed the culture, atmosphere and tone of the film to come.

Choosing a Sport / Drama film ...

We have chose this type of genre because we love sports and a bit of drama in it.
our first ideas were an action film. As we thought about it we came to a conclusion that it is a really hard one to do when you don't have the right props, good locations and the right equipment to make a good job of the opening movie. It took us a long time to come to a conclusion and be convinced that we are doing the right decisions.
Firstly it is a good one to do because there can be used different types of camera shots, angles and composition.
Secondly the sound is an important issue in every single movie. We could use the soundtracks the way we want. The choice of our music is quite compatible with the genre and the taste.
Thirdly it is a good genre to do because there are not many locations and props involved in the scenes we we have a compatible equipment to produce the intro.
Finally we did not chose the movie just because i prefer basketball out of all sports and my other group members like it we chose it because we thought it would be an interesting, exciting and motivating one to do.

To conclude i think it is going to be a very good intro of the movie, because it is going to be different from everybody else's films.
Cant wait to finish the final piece.

My RESEARCH

Analysis of the Movie ‘CROSSOVER’ 3-4 min intro.

For my research for Main courcework i chose this movie to analyse. Some of my ideas for our courcework were based on this movie, before we came to a conclusion, because it has the same genre that we would like our movie to be and to see how does their into starts and how could we start ours.

The movie ‘CROSSOVER’ is about a naturally talented basketball player who wants to become a doctor. Starring: Wayne Brady,Antony Mackie and Philip Champion who's a professional Basketball/streetball player.

‘CROSSOVER’ starts with a pitch black screen and diegetic sound of someone walking and the noise of the car open. As we hear the door closes there is a close up of a face appears on the side mirror of the car showing the facial expression of the man. There is a jump cut used of the mans face in another mirror in the car. The music is upbeat and sets the mood and the representation of the man. There is a visual effect used in editing when the camera moves very fast toward the action. A tracking shot is used as the car moves. This is followed by a close up of the mans face in the car showing his facial expressions and letting the audience know that he might be the main character. There are some non-diegetic sounds as the visual effects are used, for instance when the camera moves fast towards where the car is going to move.
Sound mixing is used as the car moves, there are some background noise as well as the sound effects for example a background noise of people speaking.

During the movement of the car there is a reverse shot used and the sound effects and the same time, which makes the editing professional and very effective.
The camera moves up with a sound effect and then faces downwards which may be a birds eye view to follow the motion of the black car. As the car stops the title of the movie appears. The title is silver colour and the font used is very unusual, because the R at the end is extended to the beginning of the title. This makes the title unique and effective. The colour of the title is silver against the dark background which makes the font stand out and attracts viewers’ attention.

There are some visual effects are used after the title is dissolved. The camera moves fast as it the motion is fast forwarded, this effect is used to show the views a lot of detail and the location in small amount of time. There is another fast forwarded motion effect used as the character is walking down the corridor.
The camera follows the movement of the character and then there is a medium shot which makes him look powerful and the boss because he is standing up and the others are sitting down. There are some background noises used like the phone ringing and people speaking on the phone. The dialogue is used “Ring them up” also makes him the boss and powerful because he is controlling the people at the computers Camera moves into the computer screen showing the details of what is going on. There is a shot / reverse shot used shot of the man standing and then the motion back to the computer screen. This whole transition is happening in a short take and the camera moves very fast.

The camera moves slowly as new characters appear in the scene. The music used is very slow and classic which makes the character that is shooting the hoops relaxed and confident. There is an establishing shot used to show the detail and the location of the action happening. Close up is used to show that the ball went thought the hoop (basket).
An extreme close up of the phone is used to show the viewers the detail of who is calling and gives an effect of tension at the same time.
The conversation is followed by an establishing shot of a white building and the fast movement of the camera at the same time as sound effects.

When the second character answers the phone the camera closes up to his face showing his facial expression and disagreement with the 1st character ‘Tech’.

Overall the editing used in this extract is very professional and has a large range of transitions and cuttings.
The sound sets the mood and the representations of the characters of this movie intro. There are a lot of sound effects used as well as the background sound, sound mixing and diegetic and non- diegetic sounds are used.
Mise-en-esene is an important point to mention in every movie. The costumes used in this movie are intelligent, smart suit and modern sports wear and a basketball. The location sets the narrative from the beginning for instance one of the locations was a basketball court, which the narrative is about basketball player.
The camera shots and movements used in this extract are quite an important point to mention as well. There were some movement of camera for instance a tracking shot and some compositions are also used to make a good effect.

There is a similar type of movie genre in a film ' Coach Carter ' which i have looked at as well to make my research effective for the main task.

Our 2nd film...

We have been planning and discussing about who should do what and where we are going to film the 2 min film into. We also have prepaired a dialogue which we atre going to use in the movie.
Our conclusion was that Matt Harrop is going to film and myself ( Mirzo young) and Alex Cox are going to be the main characters. We are going to have another character who will play as Alexs friend.

We are going to film in Alexis house because our film starts with a character waking up. We then continue filming in the park and basketball court in Leatherhead.

We will have to make this movie better than our first peace because we didnt use a tripod most of the time which make some scenes unstable and shaky.

Our ideas are based on the movies 'CROSSOVER' and 'Coach Carter', which are both sport/drama genres.
Im going to analyise the movies for my research and get some ideads of how this type of genre movies start.

Analysis of Die Hard 4.0

Die hard 4.0 starring Bruce Willis, Timothy Olyphant, Justin Long and Maggie Q.

The 4 min intro of this movie tells the viewers what the narrative is going to be about. The hacker is giving the woman a secret code that could be used to brake into the FBI information centre.

The movie starts with a camera moving down the office full of computers and ends the motion when reaches the hacker which is an establishing shot. There is point of view shot of what the boy is doing on the computer. The computers shows the audience ‘unlocking password/ user connection…’ which gives us an idea he is doing something bad alone in the room full of computers. The camera zooms in showing the details of what is happening on the screen. At the same time there are actors name come up and disappear in a modern way, this shows the audience the movies genre which is action/ thriller. There is a short take of the hacker looking back and then camera fades in to the women he is sending the information to. The music sets the mood which we as audience see that they are doing something not right and will cause action in the story line. The camera moves into the computers screen again to show what the woman sees this is a point of view shot again. The name of the movie appears on the screen white coloured on the black background which stands and catches audience attention. There are some sound effects when the movies name comes up and goes off as well as the when actors names appear and disappear on the dark background. There is a jump cut used between the hackers and the women’s conversation through the phone.

The camera now movies slowly to the other hacker. There is a cross cutting transition used showing his computer screen. In between these shot and long takes there camera fades out into the actors names on the dark background. There are a lot of visual effects showing the information and setting the narrative, what the movie is going to be about. The dialogue is used between the women and the other hacker, talking about if it is legal or not. The music tells the views that it is an illegal operation because the music is slow and creates tension. There is a diegetic sound thought the opening scene, we can hear the sound of them typing on the computers.

Short take of a location which is an establishing shot, following by a point of view shot of the man playing a game. When the hacker hits the delete button and we see the red light, this tells the audience something is going to happen and creates tension and suspense. A long shot of the house on fire and the camera fades out. There is post production and superimposition used during a shot take of images on the computer screen. The close up of the camera of the woman typing, showing the details, followed by match on action. An establishing shot used from the air, which could be an aerial shot of the location and country. This tells the viewers the movie is set in the USA.

The music is very loud and evil when the camera moves from the top of the building where there are a lot of computers and big screens which looks like an information centre, this creates tension, suspense and confusion.
This shot might suggest to the audience that this movie could be in the future because of all the updated technologies used. A close up of mans facial expression is shown. The camera follows the action as the characters move to the other room. There is a background sound of computers, people talking and phones ringing.

The editing used in this opening scene is very modern and professional. There were a lot of transitions used. The effects used in the scenes were effective. However, there were not a lot of camera angles and compositions used.

Next peace of courcework

2 minute intro of the film...

My first ideas creating this into was it was going to be comedy/action but than i thought it is going to be hard to make it action. So we in the group decided to go with sport/drama intro because we liked the idea of sport. originally we thought about horror, which is quite easy and simple to make.
we started with planning the work, what props we are going to use, where we are going to film it and how we are going to do it.
Then i drew a storyboard of this intro. My group and i liked it so we went with an idea of making the movies genre -> Sport / drama

Analysis of Godfather

Opening scene of Godfather.
I have analysed ‘the finest Gangster film every made’ “Godfather” starring: Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and James Caan.

The Godfather opens in 1945, at the wedding of Connie Corleone, the only daughter of Vito Corleone, the head of the most powerful organized crime family in the United States. During the wedding, Corleone, respectfully referred to as the Godfather, is grateful to meet with people who need his help.

The title of the film is white on the dark background which stands out and grabs views attention. Representing Black and White as good and evil. There is classic music in the background. The scene starts with an Italian man speaking. The camera zooms out of the mans face showing the audience his expressions and feeling. He is sitting in the dark room as the camera is zooming out. He is talking to someone showing his emotions, this builds up tensions as to who is he speaking to. As the camera zooms out in very slow motion it becomes an over the shoulder shot showing the listeners hand. The dark background in the room suggests the sadness and emotion. The camera keeps zooming out until the listener speaks; his face is still not shown to the audience, which again is mysterious. The characters face is now revealed with a close up shot showing his facial expressions after the man whispers in his ear. There is an establishing shot of people sitting in back suits in the dim lighted room. The camera is set to the ‘godfather’ who is talking to the man behind the mans back and showing a medium shot of the godfather on the left side of the screen. There is an over the shoulder shot used again when the man who wants a favour from the ‘godfather’ is at an angle. The camera then follows the ‘godfathers’ motion as he comes close to speak to the man leading the camera on to the over the shoulder shot again. Over the shoulder shot is used during the conversation. The camera shots stays at 180 degree not crossing the line. As the man walks out of the room there is an Italian song played which creates a happy mood for the man. This leads to the conversation which uses over the shoulder shot.
The suits that are used in the scene represent the intelligence of the men and the colour which is black and has a rose sticking out from the left chest pocket representing the wedding.

The edditing of this movie is simple going because there are not many transtionons used during the analysed scene.

Preliminary Exercise film...

This was the first part of coursework which we worked on. We did not plan this work very well andwe just go on with it with out thinking through. However we managed to finished it on time. We tried to use a lot of camera angles and tried to make it professional. During the filming every one in my group came up with an idea and we ether agreed or disagreed with the idea. I was mostly filming and tried to make the angles and the camera work as professional as possible but it was hard.

When it came to editing we tried to use some useful transitions, where we needed to make the work look good. Also the music was produced by us, which we edited into the film so it would flow with the action and motions. We thought it will be better if we edit an instrumental into the film to make it look and sound professional. We have split audio so that there will be no diagetic sound when the soundtarack is playing, which sound better.

The location we agreed with and used was at school. We didnt look at the lighting, props and make up in detail because is was our first movie.

We could have improved out work and have done better if we would have spend more time on planning the work, drawing it on the storyboard sheet where we could have looked at the angles we were going to use each scene we shot and analyse what we are doing. We could have used a tripod more often in the scenes because we didn't and at some point you could see the camera is unstable and shaky. Also we could have made our narrative and the dialogue a bit longer and straight to the point, so that the audience would understand what is actually going to in the short film.

Overall i think we have done a great job for our first movie. We tried to use a large variety of camera movements and angles creatively. I have learned a lot from this peliminary exercise which i could use for my courcework and improve on things that we havent included or were not accurate at some points.
